Morgue - Deck 12  Reply with quote

The Doctor worked methodically, making sure to cover everything that could've lead to Capt Marino's death. After removing the enormous blockage of poorly chewed marshmallows from the Captain's throat, Dr. Jovic could see that his cause of death was simply asphyxiation from trying to swallow the mass of marshmallows in a hurry without chewing them first. It didn't help the situation with the Captain being so morbidly obese either. Dragana was curious how he could've passed through the Command Training Program with such poor health. The Doctor decided to look into it when they returned to SB34. With Capt Marino's health being so bad, there's no way he should've been able to command a vessel. As Dr. Jovic finished making the notations in her report, she noticed Cmdr Kee standing by the doors to the Morgue. He was patiently waiting so quietly, Dragana didn't even know he was there till she completed the autopsy.

Cmdr Jovic: Oh hello, James! I didn't see you standing there. You were so patient and quiet. Well... It's as I thought, the Captain choked to death over a large mass of marshmallows in his throat. He barely even chewed them, it was as if he was in a race to get them swallowed and never bothered to chew them completely. Did the girl tell you how this happened? I'd really like to know how she managed to ignore the Captain choking to death. I'm sure he wasn't silent about it.

Dragana waited to hear from Cmdr Kee, as she was really curious to know what the child was doing while Capt Marino was choking on the marshmallow mass in his throat. With her report complete, the Doctor sent a copy of it to an additional PADD and handed it to the Acting CO for him to look over before it was forwarded to Adm Arayuss aboard SB34. While waiting on his reply to her inquiry, the Doctor cleaned herself up and closed the stasis chamber lid. Capt Marino would remain in there until they arrived at the Starbase to be transported over to their morgue facility. Once there, Dragana was going to launch an inquiry into how the Captain got through the Command Training Program located on Earth.

James looked down at Capt Marino's body in the stasis chamber and shook his head in disgust. Now he had to tell Dr. Jovic what Alana Thompson told both he and Counselor Elbrun how she managed to think the Captain was just clowning around.

Cmdr Kee: Well Doctor, Alana explained to the Counselor and I that she thought Captain Marino was just playing around! They were in a competition to see how many marshmallows they could hold in their mouths and she really thought he was just putting on a show for her. When the Captain collapsed on the floor and loss consciousness, Alana thought it was all part of the act and simply continued eating s'mores till she was full. After that she figured Captain Marino fell asleep so she went to do the same in his bedroom. Next thing Alana knew, we were waking her up for questioning.

The Acting CO remained in a feeling of discontent over the Captain's lapse in judgement as he continued explaining to the Doctor.

Cmdr Kee: As for now, Kestra escorted her to another room in the Guest Quarters area of the ship where she can get more sleep after cleaning up. Alana's demeanor has changed from spoiled Princess to a frightened child. The Counselor will stay with Alana in those quarters till we return to Starbase 34. I don't think it would be prudent to have her roaming the ship in the state of shock she's currently in.

James looked over Dragana's report on the PADD she handed him and it appeared to be in order. The Commander would file the report with his log so it's documented. That way when the Admiral went over the logs and reports, he would see that the only person truly at fault is Captain Marino himself. He should've never tried to overstuff his face with marshmallows...

Dragana nodded in agreement at the obese child being secured in a guest room aboard Sutherland, with Counselor Elbrun watching over her. The Doctor still thought her ignorance of watching the Captain choke to death was suspicious and she verbalized her opinion to the Commander.

Cmdr Jovic: I'm glad you have her secured, James. I don't trust her. It's hard to believe a child that age couldn't see the difference between somebody acting like a clown and a person choking to death. She may have been able to fool Kestra into thinking she told the truth, but I don't buy it. If the girl believes what she's saying due to her own arrogance the Counselor wouldn't be able to detect any deception. I think it would be prudent to have actual Security Officers there to make sure Kestra doesn't die mysteriously from some unforeseen tragedy. That's just my opinion, it's up to you on what you want to do with what I've said.

Dr. Jovic sealed the stasis chamber that contained the body of Capt Marino and moved it to the back of the Morgue so it wouldn't be in the way. Dragana was going to find out how was it possible for somebody in Lou's health got to be promoted to Captain and given command of his own vessel in the bariatric state he was in. It was against Medical Regulations for anyone in such poor physical health to serve aboard a Starfleet vessel, so the Doctor was going to get to the bottom of this.

The Acting CO looked down at his feet as he thought about what Dr. Jovic had said. Perhaps Dragana was correct and Alana needed to be watched by Security Officers. James most certainly didn't want Counselor Elbrun to come to any harm. Tapping his Combadge, he called to LtCmdr D'Shoua on the Bridge.

Cmdr Kee: Kee to Lieutenant Commander D'Shoua! I would like you to have a team of Security Officers report to Counselor Elbrun's location at the Guest Quarters assigned to Alana Thompson. I want them to keep their eyes on the child at all times. She needs to be secured until we reach Starbase 34.

While waiting on the acknowledgement from the Chief Sec/Tac Officer, James nodded towards the Doctor and half-smiled.

Cmdr Kee: I really value your opinion, Doctor. Thank you so much for providing it. The last thing I want is for something to happen to Kestra. If she was hurt by Alana, the Commodore would never forgive my incompetence. I'd lose my commission and get assigned to cleaning the plasma conduits on Deep Space 9!

The Commander hoped he conveyed how important it was that nobody else be injured or become a fatality in the presence of Alana. Dr. Jovic was right in voicing her opinion that the child be secured till she can be surrendered to the Security Officers aboard SB34. If Alana is capable of lying to herself to the point where she can even believe she did no wrong in the death of the Captain, then she may need to have her mind scanned by someone with an incredible sense of psionics. James was aware of one person who possessed such abilities. But whether or not he was willing to do so was an entirely different situation.

Jared heard Cmdr Kee and immediately responded as he tapped his console and passed on the message to the officers on duty down on the deck where Security was located. When LtCmdr D'Shoua's display showed a team of Security personnel were on their way to where Counselor Elbrun and Alana Thompson located, he informed the Commander.

Lt. Commander D'Shoua: Aye, Sir! We've got a team en route to their location now. They'll make sure that kid is secured till she gets turned over to Starbase 34's Security personnel, Commander.

The Chief Sec/Tac Officer waited to hear if there was anything else from the Acting CO. If not, Jared would return to his duties of keeping the area of the abandoned vessels and tow ships were secured. Since there were no other targets in the vicinity, LtCmdr D'Shoua was pretty sure there wasn't going to be any threats. But he remained vigil in his duty, just in case...

James nodded in appreciation at Jared's response. Infiniti's Chief Sec/Tac Officer was a force to be reckoned with, that was for certain. The Acting CO was very happy to have him aboard Sutherland, even though it was most likely they wouldn't be seeing any combat on this mission.

Cmdr Kee: Thank you, Jared. I'll be heading to the Bridge soon, Kee out.

The Commander centered his focus on Dr. Jovic next to give her the heads up on his plans to return to the Bridge.

Cmdr Kee: I'm going to return to the Bridge, Doctor. If you need me for anything, that's where I'll be. We shouldn't be in Sector Epsilon for long and we'll get the children back to Starbase 34 and reunite them with family members that are waiting for them.

The Acting CO smiled at the Doctor before leaving the Morgue and heading to the Turbolift and taking it to the Bridge. When James arrived, he asked the Acting XO for a status report.

Cmdr Kee: Michaelangelo, what's our status?

James waited on LtCmdr Boffi to reply with all that's been going on since he left the Bridge to follow up on the death of Capt Marino. The Acting CO looked forward to hearing a good report from Michaelangelo. They already suffered enough bad news with Capt Marino dying and the possibility of there being a homicidal child aboard.

The Acting XO heard Cmdr Kee's inquiry for a status report and gave him all the current data he had on the removal of the abandoned vessels by the tow ships. LtCmdr Boffi brought up Sutherland's status as well so he could give a complete report to the Acting CO.

Lt. Commander Boffi: The tow ships have been constantly arriving and taking back the abandoned vessels since they first arrived. We're down to about half now. All ship's systems are operating a maximum efficiency. In less than an hour, we'll be the last vessel in the Zathura System, Sir.

Michaelangelo was looking forward to returning back to SB34 since their last visit to this region of space broke Capt Reich's brain. The Acting XO most certainly didn't want the same thing to happen to Cmdr Kee, now that he was in temporary command of Sutherland. It was bad enough Capt Marino died from over-stuffing himself with marshmallows. LtCmdr Boffi couldn't think of a more embarrassing way for a Commanding Officer to die while on duty. Barring any form illicit sex act, of course.

James was pleased to hear to good news from LtCmdr Boffi. They finally had some after dealing with the looming death of the new Commanding Officer assigned to Sutherland. The Commander had no idea when he volunteered to be XO of this mission that he would end up as the Acting CO.

Cmdr Kee: That's very good to here, Mike. Hopefully the rest of this mission concludes without incident. That way we can get back to Starbase 34 in the wake of all the abandoned vessels that were left out here.

The Acting CO thought about the Wildcards standing by in the Launch Lounge by the Secondary Shuttlebay on Deck 20. Still standing, the Commander addressed LtCol Carrera.

Cmdr Kee: Colonel Carrera, how are the Wildcards doing? Will they be ready to launch in the event of an emergency to protect the tow ships?

While waiting to hear back from the Marine Detachment Wing Commander, James took a seat in the Captain's chair to signify he was officially in command of the remainder of the mission to protect the retrieval of the abandoned ships in the Zathura System in Sector Epsilon. If the 58th Squadron was needed, it would be good to know they were at the ready.

Responding to the Acting CO with some pride in his voice, LtCol Carrera informed Cmdr Kee the Wildcards were always ready to protect whomever they were assigned. Even though they were relaxing in the Launch Lounge on Deck 20, they still had their flight suits on and their Starfighters were ready to launch from the Secondary Shuttlebay.

Lt. Colonel Carrera: The Wildcards are doing fine, to toe the line! Ready to launch on your order, Commander!

The Marine Detachment Wing Commander also monitored the sensors from the Starfighter Control Station at the rear of the Bridge. That way the Lieutenant Colonel was apprised of any situation that could occur from a vessel entering the area without authorization. Rafo was going to make sure the 58th Squadron would be at the ready if Cmdr Kee called for them to launch into a protective mode.

The Acting CO was happy to hear the Wildcards were ready to be dealt should the need arise for them to launch into action. James certainly let LtCol Carrera know that they were appreciated...

Cmdr Kee: Thank you very much, Colonel. I really appreciate their readiness to launch should the need arise. I don't anticipate anything though, but you never know out here.

Looking over towards LtCmdr Joffee at the Science Station he surmised the Science Officer was keeping a constant sensor sweep of the area should any ships arrive that were not part of the tow ship flotilla.

Cmdr Kee: Mr. Joffee, I assume you've got no other ships on your sensors that are not associated with the abandoned vessels or the tow ships. Am I correct?

The Commander waited to hear back from the Science Officer as he looked around the Bridge at the officers at their stations doing their duties. James was proud of every single one of them. If the day came when he achieved the rank of Captain and the command of a Starship, he would love to have a crew like this under his command. But as for now, his main objective was to keep the area secure until the last abandoned vessel gets towed back to SB34. Then they would return to turn over the body of Capt Marino and the two survivors they obtained. Once they arrived, the Acting CO was sure Dr. Jovic would spearhead an investigation how the Captain was able to get to the position of a Starship Commander with his obese nature being so prevalent and detrimental to his health.
