Sickbay - Deck 12  Reply with quote

As the Yeoman was watching over the sleeping Tootie, he heard Cmdr Kee give him a new order so he looked over towards Dr. Jovic and smiled to her as he asked if she could watch over Tootie while he was gone on an errand for the XO.

Lt. Panettiere: Doctor, I'm needed to check on the Captain. Will you watch over Tootie for me, please? I won't be long.

Seeing the Doctor nod her permission, Jansen walked out of Sickbay and over to the Turbolift down the corridor. The Yeoman took the lift up to Deck 2 and exited, making his way the short distance to the Captain's Quarters and pressed the door chime and waited a few moments. He pressed the chime again and there was still no response. Jansen figured the Captain must have eaten himself into a full belly coma so he used the Security Code on the door controls to override the door locking mechanism.

When the doors opened, the Yeoman entered the living area and saw Capt Marino on the floor gravely discolored. Jansen moved to the Captain quickly and felt for a pulse. Not feeling one, the Lieutenant tapped his Combadge to call for assistance.

Lt. Panettiere: Medical Emergency to the Captain's Quarters! I've got no pulse! Hurry Doctor, the Captain is down!

The young Yeoman remained seated on the floor by Capt Marino and waited for Dr. Jovic to arrive. While doing so, Jansen realized he had to inform Cmdr Kee why the Captain wasn't responding to his calls.

Lt. Panettiere: Panettiere to Commander Kee! Captain Marino is on the floor in his quarters! He's not breathing and has no pulse! I've called for Dr. Jovic, she should be on her way. What would you like me to do, Commander?

As the Lieutenant waited for a reply from the Bridge and the Doctor to arrive, he heard a groan from the Captain's bedroom. Jansen rose from the floor beside Capt Marino and walked into the sleeping area and saw Alana Thompson laying on the Captain's bed. Judging by the chocolate smears around her mouth, she had stuffed herself into a full belly coma too. But she was breathing...

Dragana was checking on Tootie's stable vitals when she heard the frantic call from Yeoman Panettiere. She quickly grabbed her MedKit and ran for the Turbolift and entered, followed by a quick exit on Deck 2 and ran to the Captain's Quarters and burst into the room with Medical Tricorder in hand. The Doctor began scanning Capt Marino and discovered an oversized wad of marshmallow in his throat which caused him to suffocate. There was no brain activity either, so the Captain was indeed, deceased. From the looks of rigor, he was dead for about an hour.

The Doctor wondered what kind of unintelligent act would cause Capt Marino to stuff so many marshmallows in his mouth and then try to swallow them all. Dragana then wondered on the whereabouts of the girl that left with him. She didn't see Jansen in the room and was curious to know where he went as well.

Cmdr Jovic: Yeoman, are you still in here? Do you know where Alana is located?

The Chief Medical Officer continued to examine the body of Capt Marino and thought to herself it was such an ignorant death. She also had the responsibility to inform Cmdr Kee that he was now in command of Sutherland and the current mission. The Doctor tapped her Combadge and called out to the Bridge.

Cmdr Jovic: Jovic to Bridge, Commander Kee, I need you to report to Captain Marino's Quarters immediately! There's been a tragic occurrence.

The Doctor waited to hear from Jansen to know if he was still in the Captain's Quarters and if Alana was here somewhere too. Dragana also waited for Cmdr Kee to arrive so she could explain to him how she found the Captain dead upon her arrival. The morgue drawers were not wide enough to take the girth of Capt Marino so they would need to custom fit a stasis chamber for him so he did not decompose right there on the floor. The odor was already getting bad, indicating the Captain had evacuated his bowels into his pants. What a dishonorable end to Louis G. Marino's life.

Jansen heard the Doctor call to him and came out of Capt Marino's bedroom. The Yeoman could see Dr. Jovic examining the Captain's lifeless body on the floor as he responded to her regarding the chubby child.

Lt. Panettiere: I'm here, Doctor. Alana is in a full belly coma on Captain Marino's bed. I can hear her breathing so I know she's alive. Would like me to wake her?

The Lieutenant waited to hear what he should do. He heard the Doctor call for Cmdr Kee to come to the Captain's Quarter's so she may want Alana up for when the Commander arrives. Jansen was sure Cmdr Kee would have some questions for the porky princess when he showed up on the scene.

Dr. Jovic was pleased to hear Yeoman Panettiere's voice coming from the Captain's bedroom. It disturbed her that Princess Alana was asleep in the bed, however she didn't think it would be a good idea to question her in front of Capt Marino's dead body.

Cmdr Jovic: I think we should let her sleep for now, Lieutenant. We'll wait for Commander Kee to arrive and see what he has to say. We don't have a drawer wide enough in the morgue so we're going to have to assemble a stasis chamber for the Captain's body and beam him directly into it. Why anyone would eat themselves into a bariatric state is beyond me. Choking to death on a wad of marshmallows in his throat is such a ignorant way to die.

The Doctor remained by the extremely large body of the deceased and waited on Cmdr Kee to enter the Captain's Quarters. Dragana would have to give him a full report on the cause of Capt Marino's death, which she was more than prepared to do. It was a needless death, which could've been avoided if only the Captain ate normal portions of food in moderate amounts. Instead Capt Louis G. Marino died making a pig of himself.

Hearing the urgency in both Lt. Panettiere and Dr. Jovic's voices, he felt something terrible had happened to Capt Marino. James quickly made for the Turbolift as he gave an order to LtCmdr Boffi regarding the hailing lead tow ship.

Cmdr Kee: Mr. Boffi, go ahead and tell the lead tow ship they can begin setting up the return trip for both Oruga and Mariquita. I'll be with the Doctor, you have the Bridge!

James could see the looks of concern on the faces of the Bridge crew as the doors to the Turbolift closed and took him down to Deck 2 where he quickly exited. The XO ran down the corridor and entered the Captain's Quarters and could see Dr. Jovic looking over the bloated and discolored body of Capt Marino. Judging by the color of the Captain's face, he was obviously dead. The XO noticed Lt. Panettiere standing in the doorway that lead to the bedroom so he assumed that's where the girl was Capt Marino brought back with him from the Mariquita.

Cmdr Kee: What happened here, Doctor?

As he waited on the report from Dr. Jovic, it occurred to him that he was now the temporary CO of Sutherland. This was something he never wished for, being happy to serve as the XO aboard Oriskany and Sutherland was all he needed in his life right now. But now that Capt Marino was dead, and the smell in the room was getting foul, James was officially the Acting Captain of the USS Sutherland.

Captain's Quarters - Deck 2  Reply with quote

The Doctor was pleased to see that Cmdr Kee arrived promptly to the situation in the Captain's Quarters. Dragana explained to the Acting Captain what she knew as the facts regarding the death of Capt Marino. It was the best she could do without speaking to the child about the events that lead to the Captain's untimely death.

Cmdr Jovic: From what I can tell, Captain Marino choked to death on an oversized wad of chewed up marshmallows in his throat. The child he brought to his room is asleep in the Captain's bed, Yeoman Panettiere said she was breathing so we know she's alive. I haven't examined the child yet and I didn't want to wake her till we removed Captain Marino's body from the room. The drawers in the Morgue aren't large enough to handle the Captain's stature so we'll have to assemble a stasis chamber for him so he doesn't begin to decompose on the trip home.

Dragana waited to hear what Cmdr Kee had to say regarding everything she told him. Dr. Jovic could see that Lt. Panettiere was also waiting on the Acting CO's instructions as well. She knew the Yeoman was uncomfortable watching over the obese girl laying in the Captain's bed, and was looking forward to any other assignment. The Doctor felt sorry for the Yeoman in this situation.

The Acting CO was bothered by the death of Capt Marino, especially over such a senseless method of demise. James was bothered by the way Lou didn't seem to have any self control over his eating habits and had a feeling it would eventually lead to his death. The Commander just didn't think it would be over a wad of marshmallows. Looking over towards the Yeoman, he gave Jansen some instructions on what to do next.

Cmdr Kee: Jansen, why don't you go to Sickbay and let the staff know they need to assemble a stasis chamber to the Captain's measurements and when it's complete we'll beam his remains into it. Let me know as soon as it's ready. You don't have to deal with the girl in the bedroom, the Doctor and I will question her once Captain Marino's remains have been removed. Just keep an eye on Tootie in case she wakes up.

James could see the look of relief on the Lieutenant's face, as if he just been rescued from a troubling task. Next, he called up to the Bridge to inform LtCmdr Boffi of the situation, since Michaelangelo was now going to be considered the Acting XO.

Cmdr Kee: Commander Kee to the Bridge! Michaelangelo, the Captain is dead. Enter into the ship's records that I have been elevated to Acting Captain and you are now Acting First Officer. I'll address the crew on the complete cause of death after Dr. Jovic completes the autopsy. Kee out!

The Commander looked over towards Dr. Jovic and shook his head in disappointment. He was curious to know what was going on when Capt Marino was choking to death. Only the sleeping girl in the Captain's bed would have those answers. They just needed to wait till Capt Marino's remains were beamed down to Sickbay before waking her. The smell in the room was getting worse, so the Acting CO used the environmental controls to bring down the temperature in the Captain's Quarters, as well as the air filtering system to get rid of the odor that was filling the room from Capt Marino evacuating his bowels into his pants. Together with the Doctor, they waited on Lt. Panettiere to complete his assignment and call to let them know the stasis chamber was ready.

Following the Acting CO's orders, the Yeoman quickly exited the Captain's Quarters and did a brisk walk to the Turbolift and took it to Deck 12. Exiting the lift and walking quickly down the corridor, Jansen entered Sickbay and spoke to the head nurse on duty.

Lt. Panettiere: Commander Kee and Dr. Jovic sent me here to let you know that Captain Marino is dead. We need to assemble a stasis chamber to his measurements because the Doctor said the Captain won't fit in any of the drawers in the morgue. It also needs to serve as a place she can perform an autopsy.

The Lieutenant could see that Tootie Ramsey was still asleep, which was good since he didn't want her to overhear the situation about Capt Marino. The head nurse went and spoke to the other Med Techs about what they needed to do. Jansen did whatever what was needed to lend a hand in the construction of a large stasis chamber. Once it was completed, the Yeoman contacted Cmdr Kee immediately by tapping his Combadge.

Lt. Panettiere: Panettiere to Commander Kee! The stasis chamber is ready for Captain Marino's remains, Sir!

As the Yeoman waited for the Captain's body to appear in the chamber, Jansen walked over to the Biobed where Tootie was still asleep. Looking at her vitals on the display showed that she was doing very well, just doing a lot of comfortable resting. The Lieutenant figured she needed a lot and sat in a chair by her bed where he waited out the arrival of Capt Marino's remains.

The news of Capt Marino's death blew Michaelangelo's mind! Also hearing that he was the Acting XO was quite an unexpected surprise! Using his console at the Ops Station, LtCmdr Boffi entered into the ship's records that Cmdr Kee was now the Acting CO and he was the Acting XO, due to the death of Capt Marino. Once he completed his assigned task, the Acting XO contacted the Acting CO to let him know the transition was officially added to the ship's records.

Lt. Commander Boffi: Boffi to Commander Kee! The information has been entered into the ship's records. What are your orders, Commander?

The Acting XO remained at the Ops Station and monitored the entire Bridge from that location. Michaelangelo didn't feel right sitting in the Captain's chair while he was in command of the Bridge, so he was fine sitting where he was. Using the Ops consoles, LtCmdr Boffi was watching a tow ship attach a Tractor Beam to the SS Oruga and begin it's journey to back to SB34. Next to begin it's return to the Starbase was the SS Mariquita, so he monitored that as well as he waited to hear back from Cmdr Kee.

James heard both the Yeoman and LtCmdr Boffi's messages and responded by alerting the Acting XO of the plan to beam the body of Capt Marino into the stasis chamber that was setup in Sickbay for him. The Commander tapped his Combadge to respond to the Bridge.

Cmdr Kee: Kee to Boffi, I'd like you to lock onto the Captain's body and do a site to site transport from his quarters to the stasis chamber in Sickbay. Yeoman Panettiere and the Med Tech team assembled it and he just informed me that it's ready to receive Captain Marino's remains. That way the Doctor can perform an autopsy in the morgue section down there. The Captain is too large for one of the morgue drawers which is why the stasis chamber is being used until we return to Starbase 34.

The Acting CO took a step away from Capt Marino's body and motioned for Dr. Jovic to do the same. Once the remains of the Captain dematerialized, they could wake up the sleeping girl in the bedroom and ask her if she witnessed what happened to Capt Marino.
