VIP Cabin - Deck 1  Reply with quote

The XO nodded in agreement to what Dr. Tudismaque had said about having the Professor removed from his cabin and placed in the morgue to prevent any decomposition. Thom also appreciated the empathy Jacques showed him when he placed his hand on the Commander’s shoulder.

Cmdr Cypher: That’s a good idea, Doctor. Have Professor Brewer removed from here immediately, preferably by using the Transporter so he doesn’t have to be moved through the ship. I’m going back to the Bridge, so I’ll leave the Professor in your capable hands. Thank you for your consoling, it meant a lot to me, Doctor.

Thom got up from the chair and took a last look at the Professor lying in his bed, looking so peaceful in his forever sleep. The XO wiped a tear from his eye as he walked out of the VIP Cabin and made his way back to the Command Deck. Upon entering the Bridge, Thom walked back to his seat and saw that FAdm Skyner was still on the Main Viewscreen conversing with Capt Little. Before sitting down, the XO went over to Lt. JG DeGrazzio and placed a hand on the lad’s shoulder and gave a slight squeeze while whispering to the Chief Science Officer.

Cmdr Cypher: I’m so sorry, Jayden. I know the Professor meant a lot to you. He’s going to be missed by all those who were his friends and family. I didn’t know him long, but what I did know of him I will cherish for the rest of my life.

The Commander made his way back to his seat after releasing his grip on Lt. JG DeGrazzio’s shoulder. Thom was unsure if the Fleet Admiral was aware of Prof Brewer passing away. It didn’t look like Thom missed very much in his absence from the Bridge. The XO kept an eye on the CO to see how he would be handling the news.

The Captain and Fleet Admiral were still in fevered conversation as the First Officer arrived back on the Bridge. If anyone didn't know any better they could almost feel the want of the Admiral to personally oversee the mission now he had been informed of the passing of the current Mission Specialist... It wasn't the work of a Fleet Admiral to leave behind their desk chairs.

Capt Little: Admiral, as much as I would wish to, I will follow your orders no matter how much I dislike them... As for our current predicament... Professor Brewer kept a public diary of all his findings, perhaps someone aboard the station could forward us his musings from there and if need be I can have my own security unlock his personal files, but I'd rather not destroy his last remaining sanctity.

Lewis looked over at the Tactical station and could see the unspoken tension that would soon begin to ripple throughout the ship. News, especially bad, always seemed to travel at Ludicrous Speed!

The CO waited for what he was sure would be an admonished reaction from the Admiral and how he could possibly deal without a specialist. But an Engineer may be somewhat geeky, but they are always the realist... They never break the fail safes...

The Fleet Admiral had an aching heart over the loss of Prof Brewer. Jaeson knew he had to inform the staff members of Gamma Fleet as well as the Professor’s brother aboard USS Whitestar. It was not something FAdm Skyner was looking forward to, but he knew it had to be done. The Bridge crew of Event Horizon looked saddened as well and Jaeson knew that Prof Brewer would want the mission to continue on with his scientific research.

FAdm Skyner: You’ll have his research and all personal notes sent to you immediately, Captain. I know the Professor had a profound sense of duty and integrity, Lloyd would want the mission to continue forward. As soon as all the files are transmitted, you’ve got the green light to proceed through to the Mirror Universe and observe what’s going on over there. Smooth sailing, Captain, you have my condolences to you and your crew regarding the loss of Professor Brewer.

While Jaeson was speaking to Capt Little, he brought up all the data that Prof Brewer had in his files and began transmitting it to Event Horizon. In just a matter of minutes, all the data and materials necessary to go over the Professor’s research on interdimensional travel was transmitted via USS Explorer and would show up on the Ops Console aboard Event Horizon as being received.

FAdm Skyner: Transmission compete, Captain. Fleet Admiral Skyner out.

The Commander-in-Chief of Starfleet Command disconnected the communication between SB34 and USS Event Horizon and turned to look out his view-port at the field of stars that blanketed the area of space the Starbase was in. Jaeson figured the first person he needed to tell about Prof Brewer’s death was Adm Arayuss…he knew they were really close so he sent a message to the Commander-in-Chief of Gamma Fleet to come to his office.

Cole monitored the Ops Console and when the transfer of the data was complete the Lieutenant informed Capt Little the information he requested from FAdm Skyner had arrived.

Lt. Mitchell: We have the data, Captain! Where would you like me to send it, Sir?

The Chief Operations Officer waited on a response from Capt Little on where he wanted all the Professor's data on interdimensional travel. Wherever the Captain wanted the data, Cole would send it expeditiously! The Lieutenant was there to do a job and that was what he was going to do, despite his broken heart over the death of Prof Brewer.

Hearing Cole from the Ops Station, Lewis turned towards him. What the Captain said next was a direct order but he did not word it as such...

Capt Little: Send the sciencey stuff downstairs and any private logs can be secured by both yourself and the Marine Captain. I for one am not about to destroy any respect anyone has for the good Professor.

The CO turned back towards the view screen and to the Fleet Admiral.

Capt Little: Data received, and secured, Admiral.

Lewis now awaited any last remaining advice or orders from homebase as he straightened the uniform top to remove the singular crease around his waistline.

The Ops Officer did exactly as the Captain had ordered and sent all the scientific data regarding interdimensional travel to the Science Laboratory on Deck 3. Cole then locked down all the personal logs belonging to the Professor using a password algorithm to secure it, then shared it with MCapt Lopez who was also on the Bridge keeping an watchful eye on Capt Little.

Lt. Mitchell: I’ve sent all the scientific data on interdimensional travel to the Science Laboratory on Deck 3, as commanded Captain. The personal logs of Professor Brewer are under a password algorithm known only to Marine Captain Lopez and myself. The Fleet Admiral already closed the channel between Starbase 34 and Event Horizon, Sir. When he said ‘Skyner out.’ and the image returned to the star field on the Main Viewer, that should’ve been a blatant hint that he signed off, Captain.

Cole hoped the Captain wouldn’t take offense to pointing out what everyone else on the Bridge would be thinking after hearing Capt Little call out to FAdm Skyner after he signed off and the image of the Fleet Admiral vanished from the screen and the stars had returned. The Lieutenant wondered how Capt Little could’ve missed something so obvious. Was he fit for duty if his skills of observation were lacking such acuity? Lt. Mitchell’s confidence in the Captain was starting to decline…

The CO listened to Lt. Mitchell regarding the Fleet Admiral before he replied.

Capt Little: Yes, Mr. Mitchell, I can see that... But this is a smart ship, it would not surprise me if it had a few surprises... If the Holodecks are anything to go by at all!

The Captain next turned to the Flight Control Officer, LtCmdr Centares.

Capt Little: Mr. Centares, let's get this beauty up to room temperature... Preheat the engines, let's not blow a gasket...

Lewis hoped that they hadn't sat still for too long, it already looked as if the crew was getting itchy feet!

Ajay examined the entire Flight Control Console looking for the temperature gauge to bring the engines up to room temperature without any luck. There did not seem to be a preheat setting either since the engines were handled by their Chief Engineer, PO3 Florenté. The Lieutenant Commander figured it would be best for the Petty Officer handle whether or not they blow a gasket.

Lt. Commander Centares: Captain? Wouldn't it be better for Petty Officer Florenté to handle the Engineering facets of the ship? I'm just a pilot, Sir.

The Chief Flight Control Officer wondered why Capt Little gave him such odd orders. Was he becoming forgetful due to the stress of the mission before it even started? Ajay was becoming concerned with the Captain's odd behavior. PO3 Florenté was at the Engineering Console located on the Bridge, right next to Lt. JG DeGrazzio at the Science I Station. Perhaps Capt Little didn't see Jamie sitting there in the rear section of the Bridge.

The Captain surmised from the reply of their Chief Pilot, that he must not be versed in British vernacular.

Capt Little: No, No, Mr. Centares. It means to stand ready and maybe rev the engine some... Nothing to do with the engines and everything to do with the clutch. Of course, we don't have a clutch, but you could try hovering your finger over the button until Mr. Florenté gives you the word.

The Captain turned next to PO3 Florenté.

Capt Little: One Engineer to another, would you rather be downstairs, Jamie?

The CO would allow his Chief Engineer a moment with his 'baby' to himself, to go over things, just one last time. Lewis then turned towards the Ops Station to issue a safety warning.

Capt Little: Make sure the Lower Decks clear the outer bulkheads, Mr. Mitchell, last thing we need is for another Boimler incident.

The Captain now waited for their replies.

LtCmdr Centares was still somewhat confused by the internal combustion engine references from Capt Little. Ajay wondered why the Captain couldn’t just tell him directly what he wanted from his Chief Flight Control Officer. Engines of that type were replaced by the mid 21st Century with electric motors, so how could Capt Little make references to those old engines so blatantly in the tail end of the 24th Century?

Lt. Commander Centares: I think I understand what you mean, Captain. Hovering my finger over the ENGAGE WARP button.

Event Horizon’s pilot had their course plotted for straight ahead and waited on the command to engage the Coaxial Warp System and propel the ship into the Mirror Universe with the aid of the Trans-dimensional Displacement Device that was built into this vessel. Ajay had some anxiety over the death of their Mission Specialist, he hoped they would be able to make it back home without any incidents that would require the Professor’s unique touch.
